'Hello. How is that little cat of yours doing? Mine is doing well,' Igor added.

I read something like this, this kind of construction, in a book by Nicci French (this was by the way not the only time I saw it being used). But I think this is a construction that only makes sense in a context it was not used in. We automatically understand that Igor added 'mine is doing well' to his other sentences, for he asks a question and gives his own answer to it before he listens to Balthasar (the person he is speaking to). It is quite obvious we should interpret ‘mine is doing well’ as been added to the question. Well, what's the problem? you may think. I will explain my point.

The whole sentence, everyting Igor says, is placed between quotation marks, frow 'hello' to 'mine is doing well'. So, if we look strictly at this construction, the whole quotation is something added by Igor. This is possible, but not in the context Nicci French used. They should have taken the two parts of the quotation apart, resulting in something like this:

’Hello. How is that little cat of yours doing?’ Igor said. ‘Mine in doing well,’ he added.

'Hallo. Hoe is het met die kleine kat van jou? Met die van mij is alles goed,' voegde Igor toe.

Ik las dit, een dergelijke constructie althans, in een boek van Nicci French (dit was overigens niet de enige keer dat ik zag dat het gebruikt werd). Maar ik ben van mening dat een dergelijke constructie alleen mogelijk is in één bepaalde context; laat dit nu net de context zijn die Nicci French niet gebruikte. We begrijpen automatisch dat Igor 'met die van mij is alles goed' toevoegt aan zijn andere zinnen. Hij stelt immers en vraag en geeft het antwoord dat voor zichzelf van toepassing is. Daarna luistert hij naar het antwoord van Balthazar (zijn gesprekspartner). Het is vrij logisch dat we daarom de laatste zin beschouwen als de toevoeging. Nou, wat is dat het probleem? zul je misschien denken. Ik zal het uitleggen.

De hele zin, alles wat Igor zegt, staat tussen aanhalingstekens, van 'hallo' tot 'met die van mij is alles goed'. Dus, als we de constructie op strikte wijze beschouwen, zou alles tussen de aanhalingstekens een toevoeging van Igor moeten zijn. Dat is uiteraard mogelijk, maar Nicci French bedoelde duidelijk iets anders. Ze zouden de twee delen apart hebben moeten zetten, wat zal resulteren in iets als het volgende:

'Hallo. Hoe is het met die kleine kat van jou?' vroeg Igor. 'Met die van mij is alles goed,' voegde hij toe.

Will double-u disappear?

I was enjoying my holidays in Ireland and I was listening to the radio. The woman referred to a website on the internet. There was something that struck me. She didn't say 'double-u double-u double-u', but used 'whewhewhe' instead, with the vowel like in the, the sound linguists refer to as schwa. (To write it down phonetically, it would become [wәwәwә].)

I think the schwa in the pronunciation of the letter w will become the regular letter that's used for abbreviations and for the spelling of words (but the latter will just be a result of its use for the former). For abbreviations it's quite obvious that we don't want to pronounce the w as double-u, for it is the only letter who has three syllables (there are even no with two, the most 'difficult' are actually h and y, I think).

One of the mere reasons it is likely one would not like to use 'double-u' is because it results in hardly or not abbreviated abbreviations. Why should we say 'double-u double-u double-u' with its nine syllables when we could just use 'world wide web' with three instead? I think there are hardly any w's in abbreviations that replace words with three or more syllables.

Of course this solution brings a problem. It's not impossible, but I'm not really charmed by the idea to just pronounce the complete words instead of a letter. 'WorldHO' for the World Health Organization does sound weird. To make it a 'real' abbreviation, I think wә would fit.

The beginning of LinguLog

I am a Dutch boy of fourteen years old and linguistics is a subject I have much interest in. I often 'realise' things about linguistics and languages (most about English, Dutch and the classical languages) and write them down. I now have a list of certain articles I want to write. I will write them and publish them on this blog, together with articles about new subjects.

I will publish most of my articles in both Dutch and English. However, some of the articles about the Dutch language aren't that interesting for Englishmen. I try to translate most, but when I think a subject is not interesting enough, I don't. I almost always translate articles that deal about the English language into Dutch, for I think most Dutchmen will know enough about the world language. Articles about other languages will always appear in both Dutch and English, for I will then give enough information for outsiders.

Het begin van Lingulog

Ik ben een Nederlandse jongen van veertien jaar en ik heb veel interesse in linguïstiek: alles wat de taalkunde omvat. Vaak 'realiseer' ik mij dingen over bepaalde talen (meestal het Nederlands, het Engels, of een van de klassieke talen). Dank maak ik vaak snel een aantekening, wat inmiddels heeft geresulteerd in een hele lijst met allerlei eigenaardigheden aan taal waar ik ooit nog een artikel over wil schrijven. Deze zal ik schrijven en samen met een aantal andere artikelen of deze blog plaatsen.

De meeste artikelen zal ik in zowel Nederlands als Engels publiceren. Desondanks kan het voorkomen dat artikelen over de Nederlandse taal slechts in kleine mate interessant zijn voor Engelsen. Ik probeer het meeste te vertalen, maar wanneer ik denk dat een onderwerp niet interessant genoeg is, doe ik dit niet. De artikelen over de Engelse taal vertaal ik echter wel altijd in het Nederlands, omdat ik denk dat Nederlanders genoeg weten van deze wereldtaal. Artikelen over andere talen zullen in het Nederlands en in het Engels verschijnen, want dan zal ik genoeg informatie geven voor buitenstaanders.
